WLG is the second (new-build) residential building built according to Space&Matter’s Smartlofts concept. Situated in the West of Amsterdam it forms part of a cluster of three community buildings commissioned by the municipality, who tendered the plot as a pilot project in which the developing parties and building groups were involved in the entire trajectory of the design, from urban plan, to building envelopes and public space.
The eight-storey building houses 31 apartments of various sizes and lay-outs, including two rooftop penthouses with a large terrace that gives great views over Amsterdam.
Inhabitants were completely free to design their individual apartments and were all individually guided through the design process of their interior. This has led to a great variety of lay-outs. The apartments have a free ceiling height of 3.0 meters and large balconies with integrated planter boxes. Inhabitants share a lodge and a living space situated on the ground floor. These communal facilities, which include a kitchen, large dining table and seating area, are all included in the apartment’s price.
